Open Farm Sunday is a powerful opportunity to connect, engage and educate the public. Take part and welcome the public onto your farm in June.

By wel­com­ing peo­ple onto your farm for Open Farm Sun­day you’ll be help­ing to dri­ve aware­ness and appre­ci­a­tion of farming’s vital role in pro­duc­ing food, nur­tur­ing nature, and pro­tect­ing the envi­ron­ment for future generations.

The impact of meet­ing a farmer and see­ing your every­day farm­ing activ­i­ties can­not be under­es­ti­mat­ed. This expe­ri­ence helps peo­ple con­nect with farm­ing in a way that’s real and tan­gi­ble, pro­vid­ing wow moments and mem­o­ries that they cher­ish, whilst dis­pelling myths, shift­ing pub­lic per­cep­tions and build­ing sup­port for British farming.

Vis­i­tors are hun­gry to learn; eager to expe­ri­ence being on a real farm; keen to engage their sens­es and soak up all the knowl­edge they can on what it’s like to be a farmer and work in our won­der­ful indus­try — from the peo­ple who know.

Open­ing your farm gate isn’t just about edu­ca­tion — it’s about strength­en­ing the con­nec­tion between your farm and your com­mu­ni­ty. Vis­i­tors leave with a new appre­ci­a­tion for what you do, lead­ing to stronger local sup­port and poten­tial new customers.

Organise an event to suit you and your farm.

Open Farm Sunday is your event for you to organise, whether it's a small farm walk for 30 people or a big open day, the choice is yours! There's a host of case studies offering ideas and inspiration take a look at our top tips and training, plus the OFS team is on hand to help and support if you need it.

Register your event

One of the first things you need to do is register your event. This offers you lots of help and support, gives you access to a host of free resources and visitors can find for your event on the OFS website if you select this option.

  • It’s easy to register and FREE of charge
  • Once reg­is­tered, you will receive the OFS handbook.
  • If you change your mind, get in touch with the OFS team to cancel your event.

Plan your event

Your event is run by you, to suit you and your farm. Whether it be a large or small event, farm walk or machinery display, things you need to consider are:

  • How many vis­i­tors? To help control visitor numbers, use the Trybooking ticketing service.
  • What do you want to show people? Look at a map of your farm and mark up the areas you want to show people and the areas to avoid.
  • Where will people park?
  • Read the OFS handbook for Health and Safety information - here are some things to consider.

Order resources

One of the many benefits of opening up your farm for Open Farm Sunday is the resources that are available to host farmers, to help you promote your event and for use on the day, the majority of these are free!

  • Posters, fly­ers, post­cards and road­side banners to promote your event.
  • Name badges, direc­tion­al arrows, infor­ma­tion posters, activ­i­ties, branded clothing and hand-outs are useful on the day.
  • Visit the shop to order resources (from 1st March), or print your own from the downloadable resources section.

Collaborate

Even for small events, it's a good idea to have helpers on the day so you have time to enjoy the experience.

  • Who's going to help?
  • Book your agron­o­mist, vet, local bee­keep­er and sup­pli­ers to help tell your farm­ing story
  • Ask neigh­bour­ing farmers, young farm­ers, Scout Asso­ci­a­tion etc. for support.

Promote your event

Here are some ideas to consider, depending on the amount of visitors you want at your event.

  • Put posters and flyers up in local shops, markets and schools.
  • Put up a roadside banner.
  • Spread the word over digital communications and social media.
  • Double check your event has been registered and is visible on the 'visit a farm' section of our website.
