Thank You - Open Farm Sunday Host Farmers
A letter to Open Farm Sunday host farmers from Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh, LEAF's Honorary President, with a personal thank you for taking part
Dear Open Farm Sunday host farmer,
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to you for opening your gates and giving your time to support this year's Open Farm Sunday. By welcoming members of the public onto your farm, you provided a valuable glimpse into the care, skill, and dedication that underpin British farming. Your willingness to share your work and your story is greatly appreciated.
Engaging the public in farming and food production has never been more important. For many, Open Farm Sunday provides a rare opportunity to understand where their food comes from, how it is produced, and the challenges and responsibilities farmers face in balancing productivity with environmental stewardship. These connections build trust, inspire future generations, and encourage more informed choices about food and the countryside.
Since Open Farm Sunday began in 2006, more than 2,000 farmers across Britain have opened their gates and welcomed almost 3.5 million visitors onto farms. The continued success of the initiative reflects the passion, time, and care that host farmers and volunteers continue to give each year.
Open Farm Sunday continues to play a vital role in strengthening the relationship between farmers and the wider community. This year's 20th anniversary is a testament to the enduring success of this initiative and to the many farmers who have contributed to its growth over the years. Whether you hosted your first event this year for 50 visitors or your twentieth event welcoming more than 12,000 people, every Open Farm Sunday event has helped build the momentum behind connecting the public with the farming industry.
This year's theme of "Farming with Nature" further highlights the vital role farmers play in protecting and enhancing the natural environment alongside food production. It showcases the innovation, resilience, and commitment within the industry, while also fostering a greater appreciation of the essential role that farming plays in our daily lives and in caring for our natural landscape.
I am most grateful once again for your generosity and commitment in making this initiative such a success. Your efforts are helping to foster a richer understanding of farming and its importance, for which you should feel justly proud.
Yours sincerely,
HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh GCVO
